Download Call (MP3)

Date: November 28, 2011

Guest Speaker: Dr. Mary Poole

Summary:   In this call with Dr. Mary Poole, a Cultural and Regional Studies faculty member at Prescott College,  we learned about the Maasai Community Partnership Project (MCPP).  MCPP is a collaboration between the Maasai Environmental Resource Coalition (MERC), a grassroots umbrella organization of Maasai human rights and conservation efforts, and Prescott College in Arizona, a liberal arts college dedicated to social and environmental justice.

Important Points

  • The MCPP was created in 2004 by Meitamei Olol Dapash, MERC Executive Director and Mary Poole, Program Coordinator of Cultural and Regional Studies faculty at Prescott College, to support the Maasai community in its efforts to sustain its culture, achieve education, and become politically and economically empowered.
  • They are currently working with the Maasai community on the historic Mau Narok land rights case, which seeks to restore 30,000 acres of land that land that was taken from them under British colonialism, and not returned to them at the time of Independence.
  • For more information on the Maasai Community Partnership Project or to support their work visit http://maasaicpp.org or contact Mary Poole at mpoole@prescott.edu
